Whale of a Tale, Eco Tour

Traveling from Waikawa Bay, we turn out of the main Sound into a narrow waterway called Tory Channel, (the old people called it the Womb of the Sounds) so called because of the amazing bio diversity that exists in these waters.
Because of the abundance of fish and seafood it was heavily populated and contested by the early Maori, "lots of stories."

Visit the whalers' lookout over Cook Strait and Whekenui, the place where Kupe killed the giant octopus. Learn the legend that has been passed down for generations. Visit the old whaling station, talk to Joe Heberly, last of the Whalers (if he is home), and learn the history of the industry in which the Tutanekai played a role. Have a picnic lunch at Te Awai iti, the first European settlement in the South Island, walk the beach, see whale bones, whale oil in the banks, the tripods and headstones of old whalers and an old Maori pit dweller site, over looking the bay. Have a fish on the way home.(barbless hooks on a catch and release basis)
